Award for Storywriting

To celebrate Health and Physical Education Week, ACHPER Victorian Branch offers a series of storywriting awards to primary and secondary students to relate their experiences in school-based health and physical education.

Category 1: 8-11 years old (up to 500 words)

Category 2: 12-15 year old (up to 750 words)

Some themes students may consider:

• What health and physical education means to them
• Events they can remember from health/physical education classes (funny, sad, good, bad)
• A particular event (learning to dive, working with the boys) that shows students' understanding of health and physical education
• The best thing that ever happened in a health/physical education class
• The worst thing that ever happened in a health/physical education class
• How is physical education different from sport
• The thing that changed most after I did health/physical education was ...
• Perhaps a compilation of a number of smaller stories
• My health/physical education teacher is like ...

The story may be fictional or it can relate directly to a student's personal experience. Teachers are encouraged to forward an array of class member's responses. (Note: 3 copies of each entry form and story required.)

Awards for Each Category:

1st place $150.00
2nd place $100.00
3rd place $ 50.00

Judging Criteria:

• Creativity and flair
• Sound expression
• Clear story line
• Ability to capture reader's attention
• Originality

Participant's Certificate:

All students will receive an encouragement certificate.

Note to Teachers:

Health/physical education teachers are encouraged to involve their classes in this story writing award. Children can become quite reflective about their experiences and this may be a useful focus for sections of your health/physical education program and may enable integration with other components of the school curriculum. ACHPER is quite happy for you to forward all material from your classes without vetting it. Alternatively, you may decide to forward a small selection. Entry into the ACHPER Health and Physical Education Award for Storywriting means the material becomes the shared property of ACHPER and the author and may be used in written format by either party. Award submissions close Friday 17th October 2008 and each entry must be accompanied by the ACHPER application form. (Refer below.)
